WoundSim is an application for designing and analyzing composite overwrapped pressure vessels (COPVs)

WoundSim allows the user to define a sequence of layers of a COPV and instantly view the cross-section of the composite layup as design changes are made. The layup design is then sent to the solver translator where the COPV geometry (shell vs. continuum, 3D vs. axisymmetric), mesh, loading, and analysis controls are defined.

Standalone WoundSim

WoundSim allows the user to define the helical. hoop, and doily layers of a COPV and instantly view the composite layup. The layup design is then sent to the solver translator to build the FEA model. Once the FEA model has been set up, then design changes can be made inside the standalone WoundSim GUI, and the FEA model rerun with a single click of the mouse.

Standalone WoundSim Features

  • Comprehensive design parameters to fully define COPV layup
  • Automated layer thickness calculation
  • Automated wind angle distribution
  • Short display time of layup
  • Fiber/Resin volume output
  • Public XML output format to ensure openness to other winding software or other solvers
  • One-click FEA model export and creation via WoundSim Abaqus plugin.

WoundSim Abaqus Plugin

  • Fully automated 3D or Axisymmetric, shell or continuum geometry creation
  • One-click fully automated meshing, or detailed, option-rich meshing tools which control meshing in dome separately from meshing in cylinder
  • Equivalent smeared properties and orientations are generated to accurately model both sets of bands of helicals and hoops.
  • Micro-mechanics tool to convert matrix and fiber properties to lamina properties which are required for model assignment
  • Both Abaqus/Explicit and Abaqus/Standard are supported
  • Failure measures applied to both lamina directions include max stress/strain, TsaiHill, TsaiWu, AssiTsaiHill
  • Post-Processing – automated path plotting, tank volume changes
  • Local output quantities computed by built-in libraries, no need for a Fortran Compiler
  • Resulting Abaqus/CAE model can extended using the extensive capabilities inside Abaqus/CAE
